What is the difference between the Manduka eKO series and the Manduka PRO series?

The Manduka eKO series is made of 100% natural rubber (rubber tree) and this makes it the next generation in ecological yoga mats. The eKO series is Manduka's biodegradable yoga mat with an exceptional anti-slip surface. The mat also offers a good grip after light and moderate transpiration. The top side of the mat has a closed cell structure with an anti-slip structure made of eelgrass, while the bottom side has an open cell structure as to provide for an optimal elasticity. Manduka is proud to announce that the Manduka eKO mat was produced without using toxic glue or foam, and that these mats are much more sustainable than other rubber mats on the current market.

From a standpoint to produce ultra hygienic yoga mats, Manduka has chose to supply the top sides of their eKO mats with a closed cell structure. This means that the mat won't absorb fluids and sweat. This is a unique function when compared to a lot of other rubber yoga mats. This makes this mat a hygienic yoga mat with a longer lifetime. A rubber yoga mat with an open cell structure works as if it were a sponge and shall hold fluids and sweat, leading to a lot of hygienic discomforts.

The Manduka PRO series is known as the Taj Mahal of the yoga mats. The PRO series is the most sustainable mat available these days. This mat has a guaranteed sustainability of over ten years. It is made of a ecologically certified PVC and it's produced free of emission. That is why this mat is a sustainable and eco friendly choice. The surface has a fabric-like finishing touch, which makes for a good anti-slip surface, even when it becomes moist due to slight transpiration. The Manduka PRO mat possesses the tightest structure available on the market. This leads to good elasticity for optimal comfort and support. The PRO series has been designed for at least one or two human lives, due to a lifelong warranty.

What is the right yoga mat for me?

Everybody deserves their own yoga mat that suits their needs. Every form of yoga practice and training is personal, as is the same with choosing the perfect yoga mat. Having just the right yoga mat beneath your feet enables you to fully focus on your exercises without any distraction.

To satisfy the individual needs of our customers, Manduka has developed several high grade yoga mats, every single one of them having their own unique qualities. This gives Manduka the notion that it has the right solution for everyone.

What is the difference between the Manduka eKO mat and other ecologically friendly yoga mats?

Most yoga mats that are made of natural rubber function as sponges, because of an open cell structure. This is because of the production process in which the mats are made more airy. This is also an important reason why most yoga mats made of natural rubber are less sustainable. Because of this, a lot of ecologically friendly yoga mats crumble, run dry faster or become too elastic. This process is sped up when mats are exposed to humidity or sunlight.

To solve the problem above, Manduka developed the eKO mat, consisting of various layers. These layers each have their own unique characteristics so that they can take care of maximal sustainability, in conjunction with elasticity and grip. The top layer is more elastic and sustainable than regular rubber mats and is especially made for maximal performance and life span of the mat. The bottom layer is more like a sponge to provide for optimal comfort and elasticity.

In contrast to TPE yoga mats (ecologically friendly yoga mats on a petrochemical basis), Manduka eKO mats won't have curled corners, leading to a flatter mat.

The Manduka eKO mat is made of 100% natural rubber. The rubber used to produce these eKO mats is not from the Amazon basin. Apart from the performance and sustainability of the eKO mat, this mat distinguishes itself from other mats due to the production process. Manduka makes sure that no toxic substances are used, which are used by other producers to make mats more elastic. This means that the Manduka eKO mat shall not leave any toxins behind when it is destroyed.

Is there a difference between the Manduka eKO and the Manduka PRO series with regards to thickness, feel and elasticity?

Both the eKO mat and the Black Mat PRO have been designed and produced by yoga teachers to create the optimal surface for your daily yoga exercises. The biggest differences are to be found in the characteristics of the various materials used. This is also the reason why we can offer a lifelong warranty for the Black Mat PRO.

These days, there is not a single yoga mat on the market that can compare to the Manduka Black Mat PRO on the fields of life span, comfort and performance. The eKO mat is 1 mm thinner than the Black Mat PRO.

The Manduka eKO mat has been made with the goal to be the most sustainable natural rubber yoga mat available on the current market. The eKO mat consists of two different layers to provide for optimal comfort and sustainability. When compared to the Black Mat Pro, the eKO mat's firm top layer in conjunction with a softer bottom layer provides for a unique feeling on the mat.

How does the Manduka eKO mat differ from TPE and other petrochemical yoga mats?

TPE mats that are produced on a petrochemical basis will wear more quickly, leading them to end up on the scrap heap faster and in higher numbers. When binding the surface of a TPE mat, a toxin-containing glue is used, which emits a strong odour that does not disappear.

TPE is short for Thermoplastic Elastomer. It was shown that TPE can exist in various compositions. This is usually a combination of rubber and plastic.

The Manduka eKO mat distinguishes itself in sustainability, natural materials and the scent that disappears after a short time.

Do Manduka eKO mats oxidise, just like other natural rubber mats available?

Oxidation (or change in colour) is a natural process, as is with all natural products. By storing your eKO mat in a dry place and not exposing it to direct sunlight, you can make sure that your mat goes with for a long time. To remove a possible foil layer or discolouration due to oxidation we advise you to scrub the mat lightly with a mixture of 50% water and 50% biological vinegar, or with the Manduka Mat Restore. After cleaning, we advise you to rinse the mat with clear water and subsequently leaving the mat to dry on a washing line or drying rack.

ATTENTION! Do not let the mat dry in direct sunlight.
ATTENTION! The eKO mat cannot be washed in the washing machine.

The eKO mat can discolour due to oxidation. This needn't decrease its performance.

I sweat a lot. Is the Manduka eKO mat a good mat for me?

As a consequence of the unique characteristics and the texture of the surface, this mat offers a good grip at light and medium transpiration. In the case that you sweat excessively, we advise you to combine the eKO mat with the Manduka eQua Towel. This towel too is made of ecologically friendly microfiber material.

Does the Manduka eKO mat have a rubber-like scent?

All rubber mats have a certain scent because of the composition of natural rubber. The Manduka eKO mat has been designed in such a way that the scent disappears over the course of time. The scent shall decrease significantly within two to three weeks. To speed this process up, we advise you to leave the mat unrolled for a while. Do mind that you do not leave the mat in direct sunlight for a long time. Another way is to clean the mat with Mat Restore by Manduka.

It is important to know that the scent comes from a natural material, not from gases or toxic chemical substances.

What is the best way to clean and take care of the Manduka eKO mat?

It is best to clean the eKO mat with a natural detergent. We advise you to clean the mat with a mixture of 50% biological vinegar or cider and 50% water. Subsequently, rinse the mat with clear water (tap water). We advise you not to put the mat in the washing machine, as it shall speed up the degradation of the mat.

ATTENTION! Do not expose the mat to large quantities of direct sunlight. This may speed up the oxidation process and alter the composition of the mat, causing it to lose its unique qualities.

What about latex allergies concerning rubber mats?

Because of the production process, the Manduka eKO mat is for 99% free of latex and hence safe to use by people who are oversensitive to latex. In the case that you are also sensitive to traces of latex, we advise you to buy a yoga mat from the Manduka PRO series.
